Feedback processes are crucial and are often referred to as post-occupancy evaluations (POE) and building performance evaluations (BPE). POE is the process of obtaining feedback on a building’s performance in use and typically occurs post-construction, once people have moved in and use the facilities. BPE encompasses activities throughout all project stages, ensuring measured performance aligns with design stage goals. Both POE and POE include collecting information about quantitative and qualitative aspects such as energy use, indoor environmental quality, comfort and building design; surveys or interviews with building occupants and/or facilities managers; and building walkthroughs. Initiating these processes early, setting performance targets, mapping risks, and collaborating with key stakeholders are critical steps and is part of Soft Landing processes. The creation of user, maintenance, disassembly, and reuse manuals further supports the design process with the aim to create a ’soft landing’ for users once they use the spaces. As an architect you must adopt evidence-based design, validate building performance, and share feedback results to contribute to a more sustainable built environment, promoting transparency and accountability.
