OVERVIEW

Sustainable materials are an important part of mitigating the impact of climate change. The production of building materials accounts for 11% of global energy related carbon emissions, and the use of wood as a building material can contribute to deforestation, which releases carbon stored in trees into the atmosphere. Sustainable materials can reduce waste, conserve natural resources, promote healthy indoor environments and reduce construction costs. By using materials that are locally sourced, readily available and renewable, energy efficient materials such as insulation, air barriers and low E glazing, and recycled or salvaged materials, architects can create buildings that have a positive impact on social, environmental and economic progress
